Fatigue
Fatigue is the weariness that results from strenuous physical activity. Fatigue fills 1 inventory slot each, and may cause a character to become Encumbered.
Common sources of Fatigue include:
- Travel without rest
- Prolonged sprinting
- Exposure to the elements
- Sleeping in armor
A Good Night’s Sleep removes 1d6 Fatigue. Otherwise, just sleeping recovers 1 Fatigue. A character who gets less than 8 hours sleep recovers no Fatigue, and gains 1 Fatigue instead.
Encumbrance
If a character has no inventory slots left, they may carry more by choosing to become Encumbered, with the following effects:
Lightly Encumbered: Up to 5 additional slots Bane to all Might, Agility, and Violence Tests and Saves |
Heavily Encumbered: Up to 10 additional slots Half speed and 2 Banes to all Might, Agility, and Violence Tests and Saves |
Over Encumbered: Beyond 10 additional slots Unable to move or act at all |
Note that slots filled with Fatigue count for the purpose of determining Encumbrance.
Stress
Stress is the emotional strain that results from witnessing the horrible, the unnatural, and the terrifying. Stress fills 1 mental slot each, and may cause a character to Panic.
Common sources of Stress include:
- Failing a Save
- Losing all Grit
- Taking Flesh damage
- An ally dying or deserting
- Running out of light or food
- Interacting with the undead
- Terrifying or unexpected events
If there are no empty slots available, a character may overwrite a filled mental slot with Stress. Skill, Tongue or Ritual Ranks overwritten in this way cannot be used until the Stress has been removed. Stress is cleared when the party gains Camaraderie or when a character Panics.
Panic
If a character has no Stress-free mental slots, or does not wish to overwrite any existing mental slots, gaining Stress will cause them to Panic. Panic is a short term psychotic episode, where a character is compelled to act in a particular way. This is rolled on the Panic Table.
Stigma
Stigma is the bad reputation that results from disrupting the social fabric. Stigma fills 1 social slot each.
Common sources of Stigma include:
- Treating hirelings poorly
- Refusing to pay a weregild
- Failing to meet a benefactor’s expectations
If a character has no empty social slots, Stigma will overwrite an existing relationship, causing that NPC to shun the PC. Stigma is cleared when you publicly atone for your actions or skip town, abandoning your current social context.
