Scores
A PC has 4 attributes, which describe the nature of the character and mediate the player’s interaction with the game world. Each attribute has a Score measured from 3-18. There are two axes on which each attribute is defined: physical/mental and force/grace.
Might
Physical Force
Bodily strength and toughness. Use Might to smash down a door, resist poison and disease, scale a cliff, and endure extreme temperatures.
Agility
Physical Grace
Reflexes and fine motor control. Use Agility to pick a lock or a pocket, evade an explosion, sneak through shadows, and outrun a pursuer.
Discipline
Mental Force
Courage, conviction, and rote learning. Use Discipline to resist magical compulsions, incite a crowd, recall lore, and tame a beast.
Savvy
Mental Grace
Cunning, scrutiny, and instinct. Use Savvy to discern lies and illusions, disguise your intentions, find and follow tracks, and gauge loyalty.
Modifiers
Each attribute has Modifier measured from -3 to +3. The modifiers lie on a bell curve, with each additional point representing roughly 1 standard deviation beyond average ability. Modifiers are distributed as follows:
3 | 4-5 | 6-8 | 9-12 | 13-15 | 16-17 | 18 |
-3 | -2 | -1 | 0 | +1 | +2 | +3 |
Each attribute’s modifier is denoted in the text by its abbreviation, MIG, AGI, DIS, and SAV. The following is a brief summary of where modifiers are used:
- MIG modifies Flesh and melee damage for Medium or Heavy weapons
- AGI modifies Defense and ranged damage for Bows and Crossbows
- DIS modifies Grit recovery and base Mastery Points
- SAV modifies hireling loyalty and base Magic Dice
